The term \u201cOrient\u201d has its roots in Latin and literally means &#8220;the East&#8221;. Typically, &#8220;the East&#8221; refers to China, Japan and Korea, and often India is included as well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5957\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diglib.princeton.edu\/view?_xq=pageturner&amp;_type=book&amp;_doc=\/mets\/pudl0026.mets.xml&amp;_inset=1&amp;_filename=pudl0026\/ga200801130\/00000001.jpf&amp;_start=1&amp;_index=40&amp;_count=1&amp;1=1&amp;div1=40\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5957\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5957       \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Beauty-Bravado-Swallows-and-Peach-Blossoms-Under-a-Full-Moon-207x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hiroshige &quot;Swallows and Peach Blossoms Under a Full Moon&quot; princeton.edu<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When I think about Eastern art, the phrase \u201cless is more\u201d comes to mind. The minimalism and elegance of traditional Japanese brush work and woodblock printing in the form of calligraphy, screens and landscapes, for example, has made its way into the work of Western artists of the past and present.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5958\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vangoghmuseum.nl\/vgm\/index.jsp?page=2122&amp;lang=en\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5958\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5958     \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2011\/02\/De-courtisane-naar-Eisen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5958\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vincent van Gogh &quot;The Courtesan&quot; vangoghmuseum.nl<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One doesn\u2019t need to look far to find the mark that Japanese art has made on European and American artists. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Claude_Monet\">Monet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edgar_Degas\">Degas<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vincent_van_Gogh\">van Gogh<\/a> were all heavily influenced by Japanese imagery and techniques, a style which grew into an art movement known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Japonism\">Japonism<\/a>, popular among European <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Impressionism\">Impressionist<\/a> painters in the late 1800s.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5959\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worcesterart.org\/Collection\/American\/1926.205.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5959\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5959    \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2011\/02\/1926.205-MC2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mary Cassatt &quot;The Letter&quot; worcesterart.org<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In America, artists such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Abbott_McNeill_Whistler\">James McNeill Whistler,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marycassatt.org\/\">Mary Cassatt <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franklloydwright.org\/fllwf_web_091104\/Home.html\">Frank Lloyd Wright<\/a> were also inspired by the work being done in the East.
