Dutch artist db Waterman creates contemporary figurative artworks featuring people in landscapes or urban settings.

Using layered collages, transparent transfers, acrylic paint, and rough textures, she transforms everyday fragments into atmospheric images that feel both nostalgic and deeply personal.

Art that brings depth, emotion, and a story to any home or workplace.

My formative years as an artist were spent studying at the Art Academy in Den Bosch, NL. Today, I regard myself as self-taught, having developed my own distinct style out of the untraditional medium of collage. My work unites a variety of materials in careful compositions that I pride for their storytelling ability.

I remembered that as a young girl, I liked to cut photos from magazines to cover my school diaries, books and even my bedroom door. Add to that the fascination that I have always had for walls full of old posters, peeling paint, scrappy billboards and weathered paint. Totally unintentionally, I found a new way of working in which I feel comfortable and at home. What started as copying old walls with worn posters has grown into a large number of series with new visual stories. Not just eclecticism, but bringing together many seemingly inconsistent storylines into a completely new story, my own personal story. Initially, there was one thing that was very important to me; the transparency that is normally only possible with the use of watercolor. The relentless stratification of transparent watercolors is a challenge that I would not want to miss and after many trial and error I finally succeeded in making the collages as transparent as a watercolor. Every layer of paper, oil, acrylic, pencil, chalk, ballpoint, watercolor, ink, charcoal and everything I use remains visible in the artwork.
