Phung Wang is a contemporary Vietnamese artist whose practice is deeply rooted in the visual heritage of traditional Vietnamese folk art. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, she transforms cultural memory into a refined visual language that merges minimalist aesthetics, Cubist structure, and contemporary sensibility.

Her artistic vision is profoundly shaped by childhood memories of rural Vietnam, where traditional values, folk rituals, and communal life remain deeply embedded in everyday experience. For Wang, the countryside is not merely a place, but an emotional landscape where memory, identity, and cultural heritage continue to coexist.

A central theme in her work is childhood in rural Vietnam—a world filled with freedom, imagination, and intimate connection to nature. Through her paintings, she revisits scenes of buffalo riding, kite flying, fishing, river bathing, and traditional folk games. These moments reflect a form of childhood increasingly absent from modern urban life.

Rather than portraying rural life through nostalgia alone, Wang reveals its overlooked richness and emotional abundance. Her paintings celebrate the quiet beauty of simple living and the cultural values embedded in village life.

Through simplified forms, bold compositions, and carefully orchestrated color relationships, Wang reinterprets Vietnamese folk visual language in a contemporary context. Her works become more than representations of memory; they serve as cultural vessels preserving fragments of a disappearing world.

The deepest foundation of my artistic practice lies in traditional Vietnamese folk art—a rich visual heritage that has nurtured my aesthetic sensibility and become the very soul of my creative work.
I have always believed that Vietnamese folk art possesses a unique visual language and universal artistic value. In traditional folk painting traditions such as Dong Ho paintings, Hang Trong paintings, and Kim Hoang paintings, I find a rare formal power: the reduction of forms to their pure essence, frontal compositions rich in rhythm, highly symbolic colors, and profound cultural depth rooted in everyday life, spiritual beliefs, and the collective memory of the Vietnamese people.

What I admire most is that, despite its rustic and humble appearance, Vietnamese folk art embodies an extraordinarily sophisticated visual intelligence. Its balance between simplification, symbolism, and emotional expression creates a timeless visual language—one that feels both deeply rooted in tradition and strikingly contemporary.

Alongside this Vietnamese heritage, I have also drawn inspiration from several master painters of world art. From Jackson Pollock, I learned the power of movement, energy, and internal rhythm within the painted surface. From Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet, I deepened my understanding of color, light, and painting’s ability to preserve emotion and atmosphere. From Pablo Picasso, I embraced structural thinking, geometric language, and the expressive strength of reduction.

However, I do not see these influences as destinations in themselves, but as tools that help me reinterpret Vietnamese visual heritage through a contemporary artistic language. In my practice, I do not seek to imitate, but to transform—shaping every influence into a visual language with a distinct identity of my own.

Currently, I focus on works inspired by Vietnamese culture and traditional memory, interpreted through minimalist aesthetics and contemporary Cubist structures. Through these works, I seek to honor and elevate the beauty of Vietnamese folk art, while creating a space for viewers and collectors where heritage, geometry, and emotion coexist in delicate balance.
