About This Work
Among my series of the Baroque Beasts, "Something Too Dear" is a tribute to Rembrandt's "Jewish Bride. The subjects of Rembrandt's painting are still uncertain today. The title was bestowed on it by a 19th century Amsterdam collector who believed it to be a Jewish father blessing his daughter with a necklace on her wedding day. We still don't know precisely who Rembrandt meant to illustrate, and one line of thought proposes that it may be a representation of Isaac and Rebekah (Gen 26:8) I share a similar sentiment with Van Gogh about this painting, although, unlike Van Gogh, I have not made the trek to Amsterdam quite yet. Van Gogh stated, after seeing The Jewish Bride in Amsterdam: ‘I should be happy to give 10 years of my life if I could go on sitting here in front of this picture for a fortnight, with only a crust of dry bread for food.’ The scene is a very tender one, conveying a strong sense of spiritual intimacy. The expressiveness conveyed in the hands alone is enough to make this a favorite Rembrandt moment. There is a sense of gentle responsiveness in the gestures that seem so natural I can imagine the way the hands are held to be instinctual. When I look at this painting, I'm startling aware of my own fingertips - the most sensitive touch sensor known - and their capacity to feel texture, temperature, wetness, vibration, pressure, and pain. Goat hooves and horns are not the same incredibly sensitive sensors that human hands boast. To me though, they are expressive in a way that is a bit more crude. There is an element of the bulky and unwieldy to the appendages of my beasts. Through that awkward clumsiness I hope to convey a sense of tenderness, empathy, and partnership in the exchange, that was more than a mere traditional portrait of a couple.
